Purpose of Collaboration
To explore the potential of sustainable development efforts in Imbak Canyon Conservation Area (ICCA).
Scope of the Collaboration
To achieve the purpose mentioned above, Yayasan Sabah Group and Yayasan PETRONAS have
determined the following areas that may be mutually beneficial to both parties :
* To explore the safeguarding and conservation of the ICCA’s core zone and its buffer zones as
Protected Area.
* To explore the potential to increase carbon sink through forest rehabilitation.
* To explore the research and development potentials of the ICCA biological diversity and promote
sustainable usage, whilst safeguarding its natural resources.
* To promote the Imbak Canyon Studies Centre (ICSC) as a training and education centre in
conservation, natural history, ecology, forestry and related sciences in support of the ICCA Strategic
Management Plan.
* To explore on the enhancement of the local communities’ capability to achieve sustainable
livelihood and instill sustainable practices based on their surrounding environment; and
* To explore on the potential collaboration with relevant stakeholders to promote sustainable
development programmes.
Yayasan Sabah’s collaborative partner for Imbak Canyon Conservation Area (ICCA) is PETRONAS, Malaysia’s national oil and gas company.
The collaboration shall see implementation of various programmes in ICCA related to public awareness, environment education, community outreach, research and capacity building.
Also being undertaken are preliminary works towards the construction of the Imbak Canyon Studies Centre, and the Imbak Canyon Strategic Management Plan.
Objectives of the partnership are as follow:
1. To manage ICCA as a protected area and promote sustainable use of natural resources
2. Training of local communities in biodiversity conservation
3. Enhance capacity building among staff of YSG/PETRONAS and other stakeholder agencies
4. Formulation of Imbak Canyon Conservation Area Strategic Management Plan
5. Establishment of relevant field facilities for Education and Research
